TOY-PLUS will develop a curriculum and a handbook for trainers (O1) to be tested via a blended learning methodology on Inter-Generational Learning (IGL) for practitioners, which will comprise face-to-face workshops; web-based online interactive learning (MOOC) and transnational mobility whereby practitioners and trainers will travel outside their country of origin to participate in study visits, training and learning events (O2).
The blended learning approach chosen for the testing will facilitate ECEC and Social Care practitioners to combine professional obligations with personal learning and professional development on IGL in an international context and promote the creation of an international learning community on IGL. The curriculum will remain available beyond the partnership and countries involved through a MOOC (O2). TOY-PLUS addresses the recommendations from the European CoRe research study on Competence Requirements in Early Childhood Education and Care, financed by DG EAC, which calls for a rethink of the role of continuous professional development to transform practice, including more attention to work with families and local communities and inclusive and competent systems based on values of democracy and respect for diversity, promoting participatory and democratic process.
A further innovative aspect will be the development and testing of a TOY Quality Stamp, with accompanying quality standards for IGL practice involving young children and older people (O3). The TOY Quality Stamp can be potentially awarded to local authorities and service providers meeting the standards, ensuring sustainability of IGL practice both in local authority policies and in the policies and practices of ECEC and Social Care services. This innovation builds on the concepts of child-friendly cities developed by UNICEF and age-friendly communities (WHO, 2007). We have already been in contact with UNICEF and WHO, and have had preliminary discussions regarding our proposal to align the TOY Quality Stamp with existing programmes to promote child and age-friendly cities and communities.
